I absolutely LOVE simple little solutions that do not take much time effort or thinking! If you find yourself cluttered with junk mail or things lying all around your house that are out of place then you can easily benefit from these 5 SIMPLE ways to regain control of your house.
CLUTTER CREATES CHAOS
When things in your house are not put away it can cause everyone to feel unsettled and chaotic.
Have you ever tried to find a pair of shoes for your toddler while you’re older child is running around the house looking for his favorite sweatshirt? You have no idea where your keys are and the baby is screaming! You can’t find where you put his pacifier and you’re going to be late for your appointment! (This may or may not be taken from a real life scenario in my house! 😉 )
If you don’t have things organized you will most definitely feel overwhelmed and chaotic. I for one, feel like I can’t think when my house is a disaster! It makes me feel like the world is crashing in around me!
I homeschool 5 of my 7 kiddos and I know that the first thing that makes me feel overwhelmed is when my house is spinning out of control!
It is hard for peace to reign in a house that is cluttered. But it’s OK!! There are simple easy solutions! Don’t worry!
THE ONE TOUCH RULE
The ‘One Touch Rule’ is so incredibly, ridiculously, simple that once I tell you it, you will probably laugh!
It goes like this… When you handle something that is not in its place, instead of setting it down in a place where it doesn’t belong, put it away!
It’s simple and it’s crazy but it works wonders!
The thing is, if you are always tossing your mail or your keys or the baby’s pacifier to the nearest easy resting place, then nothing will ever get put away.
You won’t know where it is the next time you need it.
But what if next time when you walked in the door with your keys ALREADY in your hand,and you took the time to hang them up?
It doesn’t take you any extra time and you’ll have to move the keys at some point anyway, so why not just put them away in their proper places?
I Love the ‘One Touch Rule’ for dealing with junk mail.
Instead of tossing my mail down and looking at it later, I grab the mail from the mailbox and stand over the garbage can (most of it belongs there anyway 🙂 ) and sort through my mail.
That way I am immediately dispensing of anything I do not need and the rest gets filed into a ‘to take care of later’ pile. But don’t forget to take care of your ‘to take care of later pile!’ Make sure and make it a priority to file the things you don’t throw out.

YOU EAT AN ELEPHANT ONE BITE AT A TIME
I totally understand what it’s like to be so completely overwhelmed by a mess that you have absolutely no idea where to start.
I’ve been there!
Sometimes life just happens and your house turns into a minefield! Schedules are busy and time is short. It seems like if you miss one meal of washing dishes, the entire house somehow implodes on itself!
So what do you do when you are so overwhelmed by the mess and you can’t even begin to imagine where to start?
Well in the same way you would eat an elephant one bite at a time, you start out cleaning your house one mess at a time!
It would be easy to get overwhelmed if you look around at everything and feel like you have no idea where to start.
So start with the easiest thing first and work up to the hardest things. That way you will see progress quickly and you will be encouraged to keep going.
It always helps me to throw in a load of laundry and somehow the sound of the washer and dryer begins to motivate me to do the rest.
INVOLVE YOUR KIDS
Do NOT be afraid to get your kids involved in the clean-up operation!
After all, they are much of the cause most of the time!
I have found that if you can begin to delegate jobs amongst the kids and you work steadily along with them, then just about any mess can be accomplished with less effort.
Having a regular chore schedule also helps to keep your house in order.
I’ve also divided our house up into jurisdictions. I give each of the kids his own area to keep track of. Not only does this add responsibility, but it certainly helps with keeping things a little more tidied up!
PLAY SOME MUSIC
Crank It Up!
Put your favorite playlist on and start working to the beat!
Music is such a good motivator And for some reason I have found that when I put music on I am much more motivated to get through a house cleaning more effortlessly!
BONUS TIP: Try to take a few different times each day to do a ‘quick cleanup.’ Involve the kids and set aside 15 minutes to straighten. Pick up toys, empty the dishwasher, fold some laundry. Give the house an over all straightened feeling. You can do this before or after meals and ESPECIALLY before bed. One of the best things you can do to keep your house neat and clean is to go to bed with it in order!
